Can anyone here (NIBBLES?) help me with my Linux installation? I just installed Linux Mint Rebecca on to my MacBook Pro's Crucial M4 but I can't boot it... it doesn't show up in the boot menu or options at all :( what did I do wrong? How do I fix this without reinstalling everything?

I've only ever successfully installed Windows on a MacBook. I tried setting up RedHat once but failed miserably. Did you configure GRUB correctly? I think that's where mine continually failed

Shit. I probably forgot to put the GRUB in the master boot record... FML FML FML >:(

I used to constantly install different versions of Linux on my old 2007.5 model though and everything worked like a charm

You can get grub to write to the MBR without a full install. It's been quite a while (well before grub 2) since I had to do it, but it's pretty much boot into rescue and run a single grub command.

You should be able to write grub without doing a whole reinstall. Also, it can live either on the first partition or the MBR. Not sure how Boot Camp deals with it (or if you are using GPT natively on the MBP).

Like Nib said, make sure GRUB was configured correctly. Is this a custom kernel you put together or an "off the shelf" install?

What are you installing from? Disk? Thumb drive? External drive?

Thumb drive... I'm at the point where its asking me what mount point I would like... how do I tell it to put the GRUB in the MBR?

It's been a while, but you should start by making a dedicated GRUB partition if you haven't already. I use fdisk.

Quick google search for a guide: http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/grub/gru…

ITS SO WEIRD... I've been using this Mac with OS X for the past year or so and used the old one with everything from OS X Leopard (came out in 2005) to Mavericks (the last generation before Yosemite)...

this is a revelation!

Enjoy it, man. I haven't been using Linux for the past few years, I think I need to get back into it before I forget everything.

I will still be using OS X because it is what I'm used to...

I want to modify my Linux install... such as when it boots up I want it to say "Skynet is online" and such lol
